Cheap Europe - Barcelona

Find the Cheapest Food, Drinks, Hotels in Europe

  • Weather
  • Food -
  • Pollo Rico

    • Located in the Raval neighborhood off the Ramblas near the Liceu opera house. Good roasted chicken. Downstairs is a counter for more informal eating and drinking, dining room upstairs. Fill up for a little in an expensive city.

    • Location - C/ Sant Pau 31, Barcelona

  • Catalunyan:       La Pitarra

    • Location: 56 Calle D’Avinyo

    • TEL 93 301 16 47

    • The restaurant was the house of a Catalunyan poet named Frederico Soler.  His writing room is upstairs and contains lots of historical artifacts.  Their food is rustic in preparation, lavish in quantity, and good quality.  Great mixed seafood grill.  Also serves cava (Spanish champagne) with baby strawberries (fresas) that are quite good and has great Crema Catalan.

  • Catalunyan: Les Set Portes

    • Location:14 Passeig Isabel II

    • TEL 93 319 30 33

    • Slightly touristy and more expensive than others, but has good paella.  Garlic spinach also wonderful.  Has interesting black rice (rice in squid ink) and their spicy dishes can be very spicy.

  • Catalunyan:       La Fonda

    • Location: 10 calle Escudillers

    • Extremely popular so lines are long.  This had a more varied menu than the others mentioned.

  • Galician: Botafumeiro

    • Location: 81 Gran de Gracia

    • TEL 93 218 42 30

    • Starched tablecloths and white tuxedoed waiters.  Great seafood, but expensive.  Very few tourists frequented this place when I was visiting.

  • Tapas: EL IRATI

    • 17Cardenal Casañas

    • TEL: 93/302-3084

    • Very narrow tapas bar, but with good selection of fresh tapas.

  • Places to visit:

    • La Sagrada Familia.  This is Gaudi’s unfinished cathedral.  Incredible architecture and tour.

    • Parc Guell.  A park made from Gaudi’s work

    • Walking Las Ramblas.  Very fun street, lots of street performers and more pickpockets.

    • Placa Reial.  Off Las Ramblas.  More street performers and a bunch of cafés to sit and rest while enjoying the show.  A little pricey, but worth it if the weather is nice.

    •  Walking the Barri Gotic.  This is the old city, with very narrow streets, lots of tapas, restaurants, shops and houses.

    • Olympic facilities tour winding up at Castell de Montjuic and then going to the artisans shops at Poble Espanyol.

    • Light show on weekends at Placa d’Espana and Fira Palace.

    • Taking a skyway trip over the port.

  •  For bad weather:

    • Museu Picasso.  The definitive Picasso museum

    •  MareMagnum:  A mall with an IMAX theater and the largest aquarium in Europe built in the center of the new harbor.

    • Museu Maritim.  Small, but describes in detail the cost of the building and loss of the Spanish Armada.

  • Daytrips:

    • Monastery at Montserrat

    • Beach trip to Sitges

    • Cava tasting at the caves northeast of Barcelona

  • Picnic:  Mercat de la Boqueria

    •  Location: La Rambla

    •  Enclosed “farmer’s market” with an outstanding selection of fresh fruit, vegetables, fish and meats.  Has several prepared food vendors.  Fun to visit.
